Japanese Endure New Year Ice Bath

It was bitterly cold on the streets of Tokyo.

But the chill winds blowing didn't prepare these brave locals for what was to follow.

The shivering participants of "Coming of Age Day" hoped to cleanse their souls and sharpen their minds for the year ahead.

The ceremony culminated in an ice bath, a traditional Shinto purification rite.

It's a milestone event for 20-year-olds in Japan, finally able to legally drink and vote.

[Norihiro Abe, Student and Bather]: "I will come of age this year. That's why I participated."

[Shiori Masuda, Waitress and Bather]: "The economy is frigid, but it's not as cold as the icy water. This bath has made me want to try my best this year."

The event took place outside the city's world-famous Kanda Myojin shrine.

While the youngsters braved the elements, it was left to the older generation to mark the occasion in a rather more formal manner.

  Chinese sculptors get Obama fever

U.S. President Barack Obama's first state visit to China sparks a creative drive among Chinese sculptors to capture his likeness.

Waxwork sculptor Er Baorui started to work on his Obama sculpture almost a year ago.

Baorui also attempted to build a sculpture of former U.S. President Bill Clinton but abandoned the head after a U.S. spy plane crash landed in China in 2001, causing a diplomatic row between the two countries.

Beijing hairdresser Huang Xin has dyed, glued and modelled an Obama statue made entirely from customers' unwanted hair.

Fort Collins, Colorado resident Richard Heene, the father of famed "balloon boy" Falcon Heene, pleaded guilty to staging the incident as a hoax, and will begin his 90-day jail sentence today.

To refresh the memories of those who had put this story out of their minds, back in October the world watched as a giant man-made balloon floated through Fort Collins, Colorado and beyond. We all thought Richard and Mayumi Heene's six-year-old boy Falcon was inside. We thought that because that's what the Heene's told us.

When the balloon was recovered, there was no boy inside. The world assumed the worst--that he had fallen out mid-flight and perished. However, we then learned he was never in the balloon, he was hiding in the family attic the whole time. The story got more interesting when little Falcon Heene told reporters he was told to hide in the attic "for a show". Richard and Mayumi Heene were known to crave publicity and fame, and this seemed like a crafty plot to garner heavy media attention and perhaps form a reality TV show.

Richard Heene pleaded guilty to staging the event. Although he pleaded guilty, he still claims he truly believed his son was in the balloon, as he told Larry King. He pleaded guilty to assure his Japanese wife would not be deported.
Idiots punch it out in Peru
Men, women and children face-off in bare-knuckle brawls in Cuzco as part of an annual tradition to clear personal grievances ahead of the New Year.

Local authorities oversaw the festival, known as Takanakuy, where referees mediated the bare-knuckled, free-kicking fights designed to allow people to vent anger from personal or economic problems.
